What is Berlinale?

Berlinale is onsidered one the largest and most political film festivals worldwide showcasing around 400 extraordinary films in all genres, length and formats which contrast greatly from one another. The Berlinale is a refreshing platform that gives an open space for new films and series from every corner around the world as it is a stage for new actors and film makers to showcase their talent.


Berlinale started in 1951

The film festival started as a summer festival in 1951 during the Cold War at the Waldbühne and from the 1970s, it takes place in February employing multiple theaters. Now days, the venue range is so wide that even the local theatres throughout Berlin´s neighbourhoods are able to showcase the screenings and receive the international film guests. This is called the Berlin Goes Kiez

2020 is the Berlinale´s seventieth edition, and you can expect there will be a special program for this year.

Galas, red carpets & press conferences

For the international guests and audience who visit the city coming for one of the largest film festivals worldwide with an diverse program including hundreds of titles from different genders, formats and length. The city prepares for galas, press conferences, red carpets and more so much more.

Berlinale Shorts

The films are able to compete at the Berlinale Shorts and be nominated for the European Film Award whilst the recipient of the of the Golden Bear qualifies for the Short Films Oscar®. An international committee led by the British Oscar and Golden Globe awardee Jeremy Irons decide who the recipient of the Golden Bear and the Silver Bear will be.

The new and the classic movies

Not only are you able to see the new films but also the ones that have left a footprint in the Section named ´Retrospective, Berlinale Classics & Homage´. New technology allows films to be restored and reconstructed in some cases and these will be screened during the eleven days. Why not? It is priceless to watch Terminator 2 in 3D.

All year round

The Berlinale takes place every year in February, yet you can come at time  to visit the red carpet and see the golden stars. When looking through the golden `Star Cameras´, you can see the celebrities posing.
