Christmas time is coming closer and this year we could all do with a little bit of extra Christmas spirit. We have listed our top tips of cosy things to do in Gothenburg in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Despite the pandemic there are still plenty of things to do – and you can enjoy them all safely outside. Traditional carols, sparkling lights and Christmas decorations – here are our top tips!

Christmas carols on the canals

During the month of December you can enjoy traditional Christmas Carols performed by the Gothenburg Youth Choir, led by Amy Elizabeth Wheeler and Anne Johansson. The choir performs onboard a Paddan boat as they slowly cruise through the city’s canals accompanied by the water’s quite splashing and the lights from the annual light show.

Christmas spirit in the square

Both the Victoria square and popular streak Magasinsgatan have been seasonally decorated with sparkling lights and Christmas decorations accompanied by classic Christmas music. In the Victoria passage you can enter a competition for a gift card from the stores in the street by creating a digital postcard. On Magasinsgatan the shops have extended their opening hours before Christmas and there are plenty of food trucks where you can buy delicious street food.

Competition for the best Christmas display in Gothenburg

Combine a nice stroll through the city with looking at all the shops competing for the best Christmas window display in town. The competition runs until the 13th o December and you can cast your vote by text – follow the instructions on the sign that is displayed in every shop window that participates. Vote for your favourite to win!

Sparkling Christmas lights in the city

The Christmas lights are one of the most beautiful sights at this time of the year. Stroll through the city and watch the thousands of lights decorating the trees around Kungsportsavenyn, the bridges above the canals, along the city streets and at Brunnsparken. At Järntorget there ais a beautiful purple light installation in the cherry trees and Liseberg has lit its famous Christmas tree that lights up all o Gothenburg.
