- Suomenlinna Sea Fortress - a Unesco World Heritage Site located on the coast of Helsinki
- Helsinki Zoo – Korkeasaari, one of the few zoos located on an island and one of the oldest zoos in the world. Bonus tip: upgrade your Korkeasaari experience in the summer season by arriving to the Zoo onboard the paddle-wheel ship Vispilä that sails from the Market Square on the hour.
- Oodi - a library of a new era, a living and functional meeting place open for all
- Finlandia Hall - visit the Visions of Alvar Aalto Exhibition and discover the architectural and design legacy of Alvar, Aino and Elissa Aalto. You can also combine the Hop On-Hop Off tour with entry to the exhibition

What to do in Helsinki with children?
Helsinki is a great destination for families! All of the tips above are family-friendly too, but here are some more ideas for what to do in Helsinki especially with kids in one day. Check also our blog post A family day in Helsinki!
A day in Suomenlinna with kids
Head to Suomenlinna with a ferry or waterbus from the Market Square and go on adventures in the exciting tunnels and fortifications of the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, visit the Submarine Vesikko and take a swim in the Baltic Sea on the small beach of the fortress island. The many cafes and restaurants cater for your culinary needs and there is also a small grocery store if you'd rather enjoy a picnic in the park. Check also the small playground! Taking a pram or pushchair with you is possible; the HSL ferry is accessible but be prepared for the cobblestone streets on the island.
Some family fun in the museums
Museums are not always just for watching - touching makes the visit much more fun! For example the Children's Town in the Helsinki City Museum and the trams in the Tram Museum invite children and adults alike to experience history with all of their senses.

Sometimes you just need an opportunity to let out the extra energy, don't you? If you are looking for an outdoor playground in the city center area, go check the huge climbing frame in front of the Oodi library and the Töölönlahti playground almost right next to it (extra points for the water play features!).
Also in the area is the Musical Instrument Park by Music Centre (Musiikkitalon Soitinpuisto); outside the Music Centre there are 5+1 instruments for everyone to enjoy. Start at the water bowl (that's the +1), where you can visually experience the movement of sound vawes. Next to it there are three black instruments, which let you experiment the sound from a simple tone to more complex sound combinations. The metal pipes at the wall and the drums up on the green deck also invite you touch and play.
If you are taking the Hop On-Hop Off sightseeing tour, the playground Meripuisto is conveniently along the route in Eira, not far from the Kaivopuisto Park. The Sibelius park has a newly renovated playground with outdoor musical instruments.
In the Hakaniemi/Kallio area, the playgrounds Linja and Tokoinranta are inviting children to play and enjoy the fresh Nordic air.
Activities both indoors and outdoors
If you are looking something a bit more than a playground to strech your legs and challenge yourself, the pine tree rope courses in the Adventure Park Korkee near the Korkeasaari Zoo or the indoor adventure park Leo's Leikkimaa in the shopping centre Tripla are great options to have a look at! And let's not forget about the absolute classic: the Linnanmäki Amusement Park is everyone's favorite when it comes to swirling around in many kinds of rides; there are even some free-of-charge-rides for the little ones of the family. Also the aquarium SeaLife Helsinki is located at the amusement park.
Holiday season special: Christmas & New Year in Helsinki
How to best enjoy the magical Christmas and New Year's holiday season? Here are some tips for everyone:
- Stroll through the Esplanade Park and get the magical athmosphere of bygone eras. The park is filled with Christmas lights!
- Check the Christmas window of the Stockmann department store. A classic and tradition that has been charming passers-by with yearly changing themes for decades. The window can be admired outside the department store on the Aleksanterinkatu street side.
- Watch the Christmas street opening parade on Aleksanterinkatu; usually held on a Saturday afternoon in the middle of November
- Visit the Christmas Markets! There are several of them, starting usually from the end of November. Here are some major ones for the season 2026-2027:

- Vanhan Joulutori at the Old Student House (Mannerheimintie 3), open Dec 15-22, 2026 (This is also a great opportunity to get to marvel the beautiful neo-renaissance-style building from the inside!)
- Kukontori Christmas Market - Kukontorin joulumarkkinat, in the inner courtyard of the Forum shopping centre, dates for 2026 not yet released
- Manta’s Christmas Market - Mantan Joulutori, at havis Amanda fountain next to Market Square, open Dec 4, 2026 - Jan 6, 2027
- Design Joulu at Finlandia Hall, open Dec 12-13, 2026
- Teurastamo Christmas Market, open Dec 19-20, 2026
- Enjoy some glögi (a warm mulled wine type of alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink), pipari (gingerbread) and joulutorttu (puff pastry filled with plum marmelade)
- Experience the enchanting tradition of Lucia, where a chosen maiden, adorned with a crown of candles, leads a procession to celebrate the Festival of Light in Finland. This beautiful ceremony takes place yearly on December 13.
- Sing Christmas carols at the "Kauneimmat joululaulut" events. Although these events are typically in Finnish, it doesn't dampen the festive atmosphere!
- On Boxing Day (December 26), check if there are any Tapaninpäivän ajelu arranged somewhere in the city, for example in Seurasaari. This is a Finnish tradition of a fun ride on a horse-drawn sleigh.
- The New Year is welcomed with festivities on the New Year's Eve. Lot's of events around the city and New Year's reception party at Kansalaistori; usually late afternoon for families and before midnight for grown-ups.
- Lux Helsinki, a light art festival, is held on the first days of January around Helsinki (Dec 30, 2026-Jan 6, 2027).
- For sightseeing, check the Panorama Sightseeing Tour by bus, available daily from the Senate Square (except no departures on Dec 24)
