Are you longing for Christmas? Soon, the first Advent is here, and the time has come to visit Christmas markets to get into the proper Christmas mood. We have listed five of Stockholm's most traditional and cosy markets where you can buy handicrafts, delicacies and Christmas gifts. Plan your visit to Vaxholm, Sigtuna, Drottningholm Castle or to central Stockholm at Skansen or Stortorget - on the map at the end of this post you’ll find a map of all Christmas markets.

Historic Christmas market at Skansen

The Christmas market at Skansen dates all the way back to the beginning of the 20th century and is a tradition for many. The Park is filled to the brim with a magical Christmas atmosphere, and you can buy everything from delicacies to the Christmas table, marzipan, bread, locally produced crafts of textile, wood, ceramics, and wool in the market stalls on Bollnästorget. Hungry? No worries, then you can revel in goodies from the food stalls where there are charcoal buns, waffles, mulled wine, sausages with bread and roasted almonds. As always at Skansen, you get to experience a piece of history and meet the winter-awake animals.

Christmas market at Vaxholm

In the capital of the archipelago's, Vaxholm, you can visit the annual Christmas market during the second Advent weekend. This year's market will be at “Lägret” where Christmas shopping is combined with good food and fun activities. The weekend will offer a lovely Christmas atmosphere. Take the opportunity to walk down to Vaxholm's cosy city centre and visit the shops along Hamngatan and Rådhustorget – suits you who are on a hunt for the perfect Christmas gift.

Christmas market in Sigtuna

Celebrate Advent in Sigtuna and go to the classic Christmas market along the cosy streets of Sweden's first city. Sigtuna's Christmas market is known for being genuine and offering traditional crafts, food, and delicacies. Here you can dance around the Christmas tree, listen to Christmas music, watch the Lucia parade, visit Santa and much more. If you can’t get enough of the Christmas atmosphere, the “Christmas Round” is for you. Take the opportunity to visit several traditional places nearby Sigtuna - the stone barn in the Steninge castle village, the area around Wenngarn's castle, the Herresta barn in Odensala and the farm shop in Österby Gård.

Stortorget’s Christmas market in Old Town

You are drawn into an extraordinary Christmas atmosphere when you visit the Old Town and Stortorget's Christmas market. In the market stalls from the 40's you can find everything you can think of that belongs in a Christmas market - everything from sweets, crafts, forging, delicacies such as sausages, cheeses and game meat, mulled wine, cotton candy, ceramics, spices, wreaths and much more. Since the market is open daily around Christmas, there are many opportunities for a visit or two.

When: Daily during the period November 20 to December 23

Christmas fair at Drottningholm Castle

According to tradition, a Christmas fair is arranged at the castle courtyard at Drottningholm Castle during the second Advent. The Christmas feeling is top notch, and the focus is on Swedish crafts and small foods. Skilled craftsmen such as blacksmiths, candle makers, straw craftsmen, textile artists and many more are represented on the market. The food stalls offer everything from cheese, home-baked bread, homemade mustard, fish, mulled wine, and ham to bring along home.

During the fair, the castle is open for the public, take the opportunity to see the parade floors either on your own or during a guided tour.
