Ariodante opera - summer 2019
The great highlight of the season, G F Handel’s opera Ariodante, is a joint creation with the theatre’s Artist in Residence, mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg, who also sings the title role. Ian Page leads the Drottningholm Theatre Orchestra and an international stellar ensemble in director Nicola Raab’s staging.
Ariodante is one of Handel’s most frequently performed operas. It is a work of sublime Baroque music with a plot centred on life and death. The drama is set in mediaeval Scotland, where Ariodante is in love with the princess Ginevra, who is wrongly accused of infidelity. The lovers must hold out through three acts of love, entanglement, betrayal and revenge before they can finally fall into each other’s arms. The opera was first performed in 1735 at Covent Garden, and had its Sweden premiere in 1964 at this very theatre.
Drottningholms Slottsteater, the Court Theatre, is a unique theatre building from 1766 on the Royal domain of Drottningholm. This is the only 18th century theatre in the world with its original wooden stage machinery, operated by hand, still in us. Drottningholms Court Theatre's website.
